CASE IN POINT

Real people. Real decisions. Stories worth telling.

THE STORY BEHIND SHONTAUE THE CLEANING GURU

Shontaue Hodo was like most young ladies around her age of 14 but an idea that surpassed her years was growing alongside her. It was at that age of 14 when she decided she wanted to own her very own business. At 14, she couldn't have known everything that building a business would eventually demand of her. Wonderfully enough, the ambition stuck anyway.

Today she’s the founder and owner of Shontaue The Cleaning Guru LLC, a woman-owned cleaning company serving residential and commercial customers across Tampa and the surrounding Florida communities. The work includes residential deep cleaning, commercial and medical office cleaning, and post-construction cleanup.

She’s also a mother, a grandmother, and a caregiver. She built this company while carrying all of that. What started as a teenage dream is now a push to create financial stability, open doors for other people, and leave something solid for her family and community.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

For some people, starting a business come out of pure necessity. Others have the ability to spot a gap in the market. Shontaue started with something she simply loved doing: cleaning.

She loved transforming spaces and seeing the satisfaction her work brought others. What many saw as a household chore, Shontaue saw as a service worth taking pride in and building a business around.

The idea never left her, even when family responsibilities, bills, and life’s curveballs took priority. She puts it this way:

“I believe that sometimes a dream is planted in your heart long before you are ready to bring it to life.”

For her, this was never only about being her own boss. She wanted financial independence and something she could hand down to her children and grandchildren. At some point she saw that waiting for perfect conditions might mean never starting. That is a point that we are seeing as a recurring theme when speaking to different business owners.

THE TURNING POINT

Her biggest fear going in was failure. I mean that’s completely understandable for anyone going in to starting something from the ground up. Would she find enough customers? Could she handle the finances? What if it didn’t work, with a family counting on her?

You see, those questions didn’t go away. But she decided that if she wanted her circumstances to change, she had to act. She leaned on prayer, determination, and her faith in God, and she moved forward.

Making Shontaue The Cleaning Guru LLC official was one of the defining moments of the journey. The dream finally had a name now.

Then she learned that doing excellent work and running a company are not the same skill. There were:

  • budgets,

  • relationships

  • contracts

  • professional standards to deal with

She went after more business education, including the City of Tampa LLC StartUp Academy and a Turner Construction business development program, and both sharpened her sense of preparation and professionalism.

Education didn’t remove every obstacle. Work slowed down. Contracts were hard to land. Customer payments came late, and her obligations kept coming either way. Not every opportunity turned into a signed contract, and not every tough season paid off right away.

Those stretches taught her that ambition isn’t enough. You also need patience, a financial plan, and the ability to keep moving when things get uncertain. And she learned not to judge her whole journey by one hard season.

BUILDING SOMETHING THAT LASTS

For Shontaue, growth means more than adding customers. It means building a company that can serve larger organizations, meet professional expectations, and eventually hire other people.

Her services now include residential and commercial cleaning, medical office cleaning, move-in and move-out cleaning, post-construction cleanup, carpet cleaning, pressure washing, organizing, and disinfecting. She’s also working on her professional credentials and building relationships with contractors and property managers, so she’s better positioned for commercial and government contracts. Networking, business education, and financial management have become central to how she thinks about staying in business.

Her motivation goes past the numbers. She wants her children and grandchildren to see what determination can do. She wants to show that heavy responsibilities, setbacks, and a hard start don’t decide where you end up. And she hopes the company will one day give other hardworking people in her community a place to work.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

❝

"Having a passion is a beautiful starting point, but learning the business side of your passion is what helps turn a dream into a sustainable company."

WHAT COMES NEXT

Shontaue is aiming higher. Over the next three to five years, she wants Shontaue The Cleaning Guru to be a respected name in commercial and government cleaning. She’s targeting larger contracts with government agencies, healthcare facilities, schools, construction companies, and commercial properties. She also wants to expand across Florida, hire more workers, and create stable jobs.

That will take more preparation, persistence, and learning. But the goal was never just a count of buildings cleaned or contracts won. She wants to build a respected company that serves her community and gives her family a lasting foundation.

To anyone sitting on a dream they’re afraid to chase, she says:

“Don’t give up on a dream that God placed in your heart just because the journey looks difficult.”

Her advice is to start with what you have, keep learning, and keep going even when you don’t have every answer. After carrying this dream since she was 14, she knows progress starts with a decision. Her closing words:

“Your beginning does not determine your ending. Keep going.”

LEGACY TAKEAWAY

Something valuable we have learned from Shontaue and other business owners like her is that skill gets you started but systems keep you going.

Shontaue is great at the work she provides. What she says she wishes she’d learned sooner is everything around it: budgeting, contracts, certifications, and steady cash flow. That’s where a lot of business owners get squeezed. Payments show up late, but expenses don’t wait. Bigger contracts take prep work before they pay a dime.

If you own a business, build the foundation while things are going well: a cash reserve, a clear picture of your monthly obligations, and a plan for the slow seasons. Passion starts the business. Planning protects it.
